Check for Broken Links is our free WordPress plugin. By the end of this page you will have it installed and know where each part lives in wp-admin.

Plan: the plugin is free on every plan. Connecting it to a paid plan on brokenlinkchecker.io switches on its Pro features.

What the plugin is

brokenlinkchecker.io is the product, and the plugin comes with it as a bonus. The plugin scans your posts and pages for broken links from inside wp-admin. It also lets you fix those links without opening each post.

Once you connect the site to your account, the plugin also shows the brokenlinkchecker.io SEO tools in wp-admin. Connect your site explains what connecting adds.

Requirements

  • WordPress 6.0 or newer.
  • PHP 7.2 or newer.
  • An administrator account on the site. Only administrators see the plugin.

On an older WordPress or PHP version, the plugin shows a notice at the top of wp-admin. You can dismiss it, but update when you can.

Install from wp-admin

  1. In wp-admin, go to Plugins and click Add New Plugin.
  2. Search for "Check for Broken Links".
  3. Click Install Now on the plugin by Norse Digital Group.
  4. Click Activate.

The plugin is also listed on wordpress.org under the slug check-for-broken-links, and the current release is version 3.1.3.

The changelog on wordpress.org lists what changed in every release.

Find your way around

The plugin adds a menu called Broken Links to the wp-admin sidebar. These are its pages, in the order they appear:

  • Dashboard shows your link health and the plugin's tools at a glance.
  • Broken link scan holds the results table and the fix actions.
  • Scan reports lists your last 20 scans.
  • Rank Tracker, SEO / AEO Audit, Internal Link Optimizer, AI Visibility Tracker and Uptime Monitor are the SEO tools.
  • SEO / AEO Tip shows a weekly tip.
  • Settings & billing holds the settings and the connection to your account.
  • Help answers common questions.
  • Upgrade to Pro shows the plans. On a site with Pro, it reads Plans & upgrades.

The wp-admin toolbar also gets a Broken Link Checker menu with shortcuts to the main pages.

The first screen

The Dashboard is the first page you see. Before your first scan, the SITE LINK HEALTH card says how many items are ready to scan.

  1. Click Start first scan.
  2. Keep the page open while the progress bar runs.
  3. The plugin opens Broken link scan when the scan finishes.

After that, the Dashboard shows a health score from 0 to 100. The score is the share of checked links that are not broken.

A banner at the top invites you to connect the site. Click Connect this site when you are ready, or dismiss the banner for now.
