Extension privacy

The extension sends very little and reads nothing on its own. By the end of this page you will know what leaves your browser and what stays inside it.

Plan: the same privacy rules apply on every plan and in guest mode.

What leaves your browser#

The extension talks only to brokenlinkchecker.io, over HTTPS, and only when you act.

• When you start a scan, it sends the address of the tab, the scan type and your scan options.
• While a scan runs, it asks our servers for the progress of that one scan.
• When you sign in, it sends a device name such as "Chrome on Windows", which shows under Connected apps.
• When you remove it, Chrome opens a feedback page that includes the version number of the extension.

Only the tab address leaves your browser, never the page content, your cookies or your history. Our servers fetch the page themselves, the same way the website scanner does. In guest mode, the extension sends no name or email, because there is no account yet.

What the extension never does#

• It reads no page on its own. It sees the address of a tab only after you click its icon in that tab.
• It watches no page in the background. The only script it adds to a page is the highlight you ask for.
• It keeps no browsing history. The extension has no permission to read your history, and it sends no usage tracking.
• It never reads your clipboard. COPY only writes the address of a link to it.

What stays in Chrome#

Some data stays inside Chrome, so the extension works the next time you open it.

• On this computer: your sign-in, a short summary of your account, your last twenty scans, dismissed suggestions and ignored links.
• Until you close Chrome: the current scan and the results that streamed in.
• Across your Chrome profile: your theme, scan defaults, exclude patterns and notification choice.

Removing the extension deletes everything it stored in Chrome, including your local scan history.

What brokenlinkchecker.io keeps#

Scan results are stored on brokenlinkchecker.io, the same way as any scan from the website. Every scan has a report page with source pages, anchor text and status codes. Each report page stays online for 30 days after the scan.

A signed-in extension appears under Connected apps on your Account page. You can revoke it there at any time, as Guest mode and signing in shows.
