How to Check Your Bing Ranking (and Track It Over Time)

Quick answer

Check your Bing ranking in Bing Webmaster Tools first, then confirm the exact position with a rank checker set to your country. Use a rank tracker to store the position every week.

A single manual search is the least reliable of the four methods, because Bing shapes results by location and account.

What a Bing ranking actually is

A Bing ranking is the position of one URL for one keyword, in one country, on one device, on one date. Change any of those five things and the number can change with it.

This matters because most people ask "where do I rank on Bing?" and expect one answer. There is no single answer. A page can sit at #3 for a query in Norway on desktop and at #11 for the same query in Germany on mobile.

So a useful check records all five parts. Position alone tells you very little a week later. Position plus URL plus country plus device plus date lets you compare checks and see movement.

Bing also runs its own index and its own signals. The same page can rank very differently on Google. We cover the reasons in Bing SEO vs Google SEO: 9 differences that change how you rank. For this article, treat Bing as its own engine with its own numbers.

Why Bing is worth checking at all

Bing holds about 4.47% of global search and 8.84% of desktop search, according to StatCounter data for August 2026. Google is far bigger, and we say so plainly. Two things still make Bing worth a weekly look.

First, desktop is where most B2B buying happens, and Bing's share doubles on desktop. Windows and Edge ship with Bing as the default. Many office users never change it.

Second, Microsoft Copilot answers from Bing's index. Pages that rank well on Bing are more likely to feed Copilot answers. Since February 2026, Bing Webmaster Tools has shown a separate AI Performance report with Copilot citations. We come back to that below.

Fewer SEO teams tune for Bing, so the top spots are easier to win. Checking your position is the first step to taking them.

Method 2: Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft's free console for site owners, and it is the only source that comes straight from Bing. If your site is not verified there yet, do that first. The 10-step guide to ranking on Bing walks through verification and IndexNow.

Where the numbers live

Go to Reports, then Search Performance. The chart shows clicks and impressions over time. Turn on average CTR and average position. Below the chart, switch to the Keywords tab. Each row shows a query, its impressions, clicks, CTR and average position. Click a keyword to see which of your pages served for it.

Bing keeps up to 16 months of Search Performance data. That is enough to compare this quarter with last year.

The average position trap

The position you see in Bing Webmaster Tools is an average across every impression for that keyword. Every country, every device, every day in the range gets blended into one number.

So a page at #2 in Norway and #20 in the United States can show an average of #11. Neither market ever saw #11. Filter by country and device before you read the number, and read the trend rather than the exact value.

Bing's reporting also separates the average position at impression from the average position at click. The click figure skews high, because people click top results more often. Use the impression figure when you compare over time.

What Bing Webmaster Tools cannot do

It only shows keywords that already produce impressions for your site. A keyword you want to rank for, but do not rank for yet, never appears. It shows nothing about competitors. And you cannot pick one country and one device and see the exact rank on a set date. For that you need a checker or a tracker.

Method 3: A Bing rank checker

A Bing rank checker runs one search for one keyword from a clean location and reports the exact position. It removes your account, your history and your IP from the equation. That makes it the right tool for a precise one-off check.

The free checker on our Bing rank tracker page works this way. Enter a domain, a keyword and a country. You get the current Bing position in seconds, with no signup. The check is locked to Bing, so it never mixes in Google results.

Use a checker when you want to answer one question quickly. Did the new page get indexed and rank? Where does a competitor sit for this term? Is the position in Norway the same as in Sweden?

A checker still gives you one dot on the chart. It answers "where now", not "which way".

Method 4: A Bing rank tracker with history

A rank tracker repeats the checker on a schedule and stores every result. Each check saves the position, the ranking URL and the date, per keyword, per country and per device. After a few weeks the history shows whether your work moved anything.

The Bing rank tracker checks each keyword weekly and keeps the full history across 24 countries. It tracks up to 5 competitor domains per project, so you see their positions next to yours. The free plan covers 10 keywords. Bing tracking is included on every plan.

The weekly digest lists what moved on Bing and where competitors gained. That is the report to read on Monday morning. Agencies can put the same digest in a client report and own a line item almost no competitor offers.

The same account tracks the Google side with the keyword rank tracker. Watch both and you see the gap between engines for each page.

Which method to use, and when

Each method answers a different question. Pick by the question, not by habit.

MethodBest forBlind spot

Bing Webmaster ToolsClicks, impressions, CTR from Bing itselfAveraged positions, no competitors, only keywords you already rank for

In practice, most site owners use two of them. Bing Webmaster Tools tells you what Bing already sends you. A rank tracker tells you where each target keyword stands and which way it moves. Together they cover both traffic and position.

How to read Bing rankings over time

Weekly checks are the right cadence for most sites. Bing does not reshuffle daily, and daily data adds noise without adding information. Sites that publish several times a week can run a daily check on the pages that matter most.

Wait four weeks before you judge

One week of movement is often noise. A page can drop three places one week and recover the next with no change on your side. Judge a change after four weeks, and treat eight weeks as the real signal.

Watch the ranking URL, not just the position

When the position holds but the URL changes, Bing has swapped which of your pages it prefers for that keyword. That usually means two pages compete for the same term. Merge them or point internal links at the one you want to win. The internal link optimizer finds the pages that lack links.

Tie moves to dates

Write down what you changed and when. A title rewrite on 3 September and a move from #9 to #4 by 1 October is a result you can repeat. Without the date, the same move is just a number.

Compare Bing with Bing

Do not compare a Bing position with a Google position and call the difference a problem. They are different engines. Compare this week's Bing position with last month's Bing position.

Five mistakes that make Bing rank checks wrong

Checking from the wrong country. Bing results differ by market. A check from a US IP tells you nothing about Norwegian customers.

Mixing desktop and mobile. Bing's desktop share is many times its mobile share, so desktop positions are the ones to watch for most sites. Track them separately and compare like with like.

Reading the Webmaster Tools average as an exact rank. It is a blend across countries, devices and days. Filter first.

Checking while signed in. Your Microsoft account history pushes your own site up for you. Sign out or use a tool that checks from a clean session.

Checking once and moving on. One position is a snapshot. A trend needs at least four weekly points.

What about Copilot?

Bing rankings feed Copilot, but a good Bing position does not guarantee a Copilot citation. Since February 2026, Bing Webmaster Tools has offered an AI Performance report. It shows how often Copilot used your pages as a source over a rolling 90 days, and which internal queries triggered those citations. Microsoft added intent labels, topic groups and citation share to the report in June 2026.

The report covers Copilot and Bing's own AI summaries. It does not cover ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity. The AI visibility monitor tracks whether those assistants mention your brand, so you can see the whole picture next to your Bing positions.

What to do after you check

A ranking is a measurement. The work starts when you know the number.

Pages stuck on page two, positions 11 to 20, are the fastest wins on Bing. Rewrite the title to match the words people search, add internal links from stronger pages, and resubmit through IndexNow.

Pages with many impressions and few clicks need a sharper title and description. The position is fine. The packaging is not.

Pages that never appear need a technical check first. The SEO and AEO audit lists the fixes in order of impact. Broken links on the page count too, and we explain why in Do broken links affect SEO?.

Then set the tracker and leave it alone for four weeks. The next digest tells you whether the work paid off.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my Bing ranking for free?

Use the free checker on the Bing rank tracker page. Enter your domain, a keyword and a country, and you get the current position with no signup. A free account then tracks 10 keywords weekly with full history.

Does Bing Webmaster Tools show my exact ranking?

No. It shows an average position across all impressions for the keyword in the date range. Filter by country and device to get closer, and use a rank checker for the exact position on a given day.

How often should I check Bing rankings?

Weekly for most sites. Judge changes after four weeks, and treat eight weeks as the reliable signal. Daily checks make sense only for a few high-value pages on sites that publish often.

Why is my Bing ranking different from my Google ranking?

Bing and Google keep separate indexes and weigh signals differently. The same page can sit at #2 on Bing and #12 on Google. Track both, and compare each engine only with itself.

Can I track Bing rankings in WordPress or Shopify?

Yes. The same tracker is available through the WordPress plugin and the Shopify app, with the same weekly checks and history as the web app.
